STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- As the co-owner of a linen company, Princess Bay resident tott, 38, brought home what he considered to be a high-quality sheet set. But he soon became frustrated when no amount of pulling or adjusting could prevent the fitted sheet from popping off the mattress in the middle of the night.
After sleepless nights, he scoured the Internet for a solution. Nekhala purchased a product that had several positive Amazon.com reviews promising a solution to the “fitted sheet problem.” But the product didn’t perform as promised.
That’s when Nekhala began experimenting with several concepts. And it was in his workshop that the Bed Scrunchie was born.
Nekhala teamed up with long-time friend and business partner of luxorlinens.com Michael Nusinkis, 38, and they brought the Bed Scrunchie -- a 360-degree tightening system for bed sheets -- to the masses in early 2020, right before the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“The Bed Scrunchie is straightforward and easy to use, and like all great inventions, it causes us all to ask, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ It is so fantastic that you will never want to sleep without it. The Bed Scrunchie has multiple uses in addition to its patented 360-hold. It allows you to convert a flat regular top sheet into a fitted sheet. Likewise, if your sheets are too short, the Bed Scrunchie can serve as a fitted sheet extender,” said Nusinkis.

And the best part is it’s easy to use.
“It’s like the difference of wearing a pair of pants with a belt versus no belt,” said Nekhala, referring to how the Bed Scrunchie holds sheets in place.
Said Nusinkis: “This is for anyone who wants their bed to look and feel nice like what you find in a hotel.”
And the pair are no strangers to hard work. Both Nekhala and Nusinkis are first generation Americans whose parents immigrated from Egypt and the Ukraine, respectively.

“My parents came from Egypt in 1981,” said Nekhala. “Growing up was definitely a challenge with the disconnect in culture and financial status. My parents came here with very little.”
Said Nusinkis: “We came from the Soviet Union in 1989; there was actually a wave of the Russian Jews coming here at that time. To see what is going on now -- all over again -- is hard. ...We work with people in Ukraine and we actually did a large donation of linens a couple of months ago to the Ukraine. And we set up a container of goods that we sent there to help refugees.”

While they were both at the College of Staten Island (CSI), Nekhala and Nusinkis launched Luxor Linens -- a business created out of Nekhala’s parents basement that turned into a $13 million a year operation.
Now, they’re ready to take their Bed Scrunchie to the next level. While it’s already available on Amazon, Bed Bath Beyond and Mattress Firm, the business owners hope to acquire hotels as clients.
They’ve sold 250,000 Bed Scrunchie’s to date, the pair said. And they are doing everything to continue the momentum.
“My favorite part of my job is reading reviews from our customers, and to see how the product has really helped so many people,” said Nekhala “That is honestly and truly the most rewarding part; I really went out of my way to engineer the product.”
