High Point Market proved dynamic for bedding industry activity | Sheila Long O'Mara - Furniture Today

High Point market seems as if it were months ago, instead of only a few weeks back. It still looms large in the rear-view mirror, and as I sit and comb through pages and pages of notes in my trusty Moleskine journals, it was a pretty exciting market for bedding.

Not a ton of new things; however, interesting product that could make a consumer stop, take a look and even pull out the good old fashioned — or electronic — wallet and spend some money. Even during inflationary times and possibly with the Russian invasion of Ukraine continuing to rage.

From products that boast natural stories to adjustable bed bases that offer storage solutions for tight spaces to a mattress that offers adjustable sleep without the additional SKU of a power base. That was sexy, so let’s start there.

Quebec-based Literie Laurier came to market with what seems to have been the best-kept secret for the past six years or so with its mattress lineup that offers adjustability without the need of a traditional power base.

The mattresses, built with a combination of latex and foam, feature a steel frame enrobed by foam at the underside of the mattress. A motor is encased in foam to maintain quiet movement that is operated by a wireless handheld remote. Easy to use, easy to move and it works on platform beds, existing foundations and the floor, if that’s your thing.

Francois St-Pierre, vice president of product development, shared that the adjustable mattresses are currently being sold in 20 states in mid- to high-end retailers. For what it’s worth, I thought it was pretty cool.

On the hunt for a bed that offers adjustable sleep, upholstered headboard AND hidden storage for guest linens, pesky LEGO pieces or a big space to stash stuff when your mom-in-law comes for an unexpected visit? Enso Sleep Systems by Klaussner Furniture has all the bases covered with its storage adjustable bed.

The upholstered bed is designed with a built-in adjustable bed base. That’s pretty cool alone, but the wizardry happens underneath the bed. The connected platform base easily lifts to reveal full underbed storage. Living in a house full of teenage and early adult men, I think that’s genius. You can stash the mess and then enjoy the fully functional adjustable bed base while recovering from the cleaning frenzy ahead of the aforementioned visit.

We’ve been hearing natural and organic for some time now in the category, and that drumbeat continued in High Point with companies including Paramount Sleep, Bedding Inds. of America and AW Inds.’ SilentNight offering a variety of options that range the gamut from being made mostly from recycled plastic bottles to beds designed with natural fibers like cotton and wool and recycled steel while being built to last.

That last part is important, so I’ll say it again: Built to last. These products aren’t designed to live two years and then be dumped in the closest landfill. Instead, they’re created to last a normal lifespan and then if they go to the landfill — or through a mattress recycling program — there’s less breakdown.

I was excited about the products shown in High Point, and as we move beyond he pandemic, I’m looking forward to seeing additional innovation coming through.
