ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Total units of mattresses, foundations and adjustable bed bases shipped in the first quarter of 2022 slid 4.6% compared with the same period last year, according to the latest figures from the International Sleep Products Assn.
ISPA’s Q1 Bedding Market Quarterly also showed that the wholesale dollar value of those units climbed 4.9% in the quarter. The data includes U.S. shipments and imported products.
According to the report, based on data provided by 15 U.S. mattress manufacturers that account for 51.9% of mattress units shipped and 67.2% of wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold last year, total mattress only units were up 6.1% to nearly 7.7 billion mattresses sold, over the 7.2 billion sold in the first quarter of last year.
The dollar value of mattresses only in the quarter climbed 9.6% to $2.4 billion from $2.1 billion in the first quarter of last year. Sales of foundations for the quarter were $388.6 million for the quarter an increase of 4.5% over $371.9 million sold in the first quarter of 2020 with unit sales falling 16.9% in the quarter to $4.2 billion from $5.1 billion in the same period last year.
Sales of motion foundations – adjustable bed bases – took a tumble in the first quarter sliding more than 25% to $251.4 million from $333.6 million in the same quarter last year. Unit sales fell 21.3% to 686.7 million from 872.6 million in the first quarter last year.
