HIGH POINT — In a year of big performance swings by major players, Sealy regained the sales leadership it lost at the end of 2011 to Serta and stands atop Furniture Today’s list of the Top 20 U.S. bedding producers.

Sealy engineered a 12.5% gain in 2019 to record wholesale shipments of $1.436 billion, comfortably claiming the coveted No. 1 spot on the list, according to Furniture Today estimates.

Sealy includes Sealy and Stearns & Foster branded shipments.

Serta suffered an estimated 20% decline in shipments, which dropped to $1.205 billion, and it dropped to the No. 3 spot on the list.

Simmons had an estimated 10% decline in shipments for its Simmons and Beautyrest brands and fell to $1.229 billion, but it managed to hang on to the No. 2 spot.

No. 4 Tempur-Pedic held its ranking steady but rode an estimated 22.3% shipment increase to top the billion-dollar mark, at $1.115 billion.

Once again in the No. 5 position is Sleep Number, whose wholesale shipments were estimated at $660 million, a 7.1% increase.

Those are some of the highlights of the Top 20 U.S. bedding producers report, which looks at the performance of traditional bedding producers. Furniture Today examines the performance of the fast-growing bedding e-tailers, many supplied by non-traditional bedding producers, in a separate report in the fall.

This Top 20 report shows dramatic swings in performance by leading players. All of the shipment figures are estimates developed by Furniture Today.

Tempur Sealy International, which owns the Sealy and Tempur-Pedic brands, was on the ascent last year, with both of those brands posting double-digit shipment increases. But that producer’s largest rival, Serta Simmons Bedding, was on the descent last year, with both of its flagship brands — Serta and Simmons (Beautyrest) — posting double-digit shipment declines.

Overall, seven brands recorded double-digit increases, with Ashley’s 55.5% shipment jump, pushing revenues to $367 million, leading the pack.

Double-digit increases were also recorded by Symbol, which moves into the Top 10 with estimated shipments of $138 million, a 16.9% increase; Spring Air, which had an estimated increase in shipments of 11.5%; Southerland, whose shipments were up 25.5%; and Eclipse, up 12.7%.

The Eclipse figure includes the revenues for the company’s Eclipse and Eastman House brands. It does not include the volume that Eclipse does as the producer of Saatva-branded bedding.

Double-digit declines last year were recorded by Corsicana, down an estimated 18%, and Sherwood, also down an estimated 18%.

Four other bedding producers recorded shipment declines last year, according to Furniture Today’s market research. They were Restonic, down an estimated 6.3%; Englander, down an estimated 4.6%; King Koil, down an estimated 5.2%; and Boyd Sleep, down an estimated 2.2%.

Overall, it was a challenging year for the bedding industry.

The Bedding Market Quarterly for the fourth quarter, issued by the International Sleep Products Assn., said the total bedding market in 2019 was down 0.2% in dollars, with U.S. mattress dollars flat and U.S. stationary foundations down 14.1%. Motion foundations, both those produced domestically and those produced by importers, were down 6.2% in dollars last year, the ISPA report said.

In a year of domestic dollar declines, 12 of the Top 20 recorded shipment gains. Therapedic was up 6.3%, E.S. Kluft was up 2.7%, Kingsdown was up 0.6%, and Classic Brands was up 3.7%, in addition to the previously named sales gainers.

Furniture Today develops the estimates by using a survey of bedding producers, suppliers and industry observers. It also examines reports for public companies, a list that includes Tempur Sealy International and Sleep Number, as well as analyst reports and other documents that assess the performance of privately held bedding producers.

The figures are for 2019 U.S. bedding shipments (gross sales minus returns). Sales of non-branded lines, including those produced by licensees, are excluded. Royalty payments are also excluded.

Furniture Today understands that there are other bedding players with significant shipments and does not represent this list as being a complete listing of major bedding producers.
